Board Meeting

The August board meeting was held on August 6, at SYBC.  The following board members were present:

Pam Halleen, Zak Stone, Scott Dalke, Amber Forster, Chet Graham, Rick Bruce.  Stew Stone also attended, as a committee member for negotiating our new lease.

The September board meeting was held on September 12th, at Rock’n Roger’s.  The following board members were present:

Pam Halleen, Zak Stone, Tom Meinzer, Amber Forster, Angela Stone, Cliff Nash, Gary Halleen

Commodore’s Report:

There have been complaints from one of the home owners across the river about a boater creating a large wake too close to his dock, and causing injury to him.  We ask all members to be very careful of how close they operate by their docks.  As a best practice, you should try to be 1/2 way across the river from the docks when passing them.

Salem Fire Department contacted us on two different nights for fires that were burning in the compost pile behind Green Thumb.  On the first night (Friday 9/7), they were able to quickly extinguish the fire while it was still on Green Thumb grounds, but on the next night (Saturday 9/8), it started burning again, and burned along the bank of Rickreall Creek onto SYBC grounds.  There was minimal damage to the landscaping at SYBC, but one of the trees will need to be taken down.  Embers burned holes in the upholstery of one of our member’s boats.  If your property was damaged, please contact Green Thumb.  They have an insurance claim active.  Thank you to Salem Fire Department for quickly responding to calls from motorists on Hwy 22 and putting the fires out.

Please welcome Angela Stone as our new interim Yeoman.  Marybeth stepped down last month, and we appreciate Angela’s willingness to fill the gap.  Thank you, Marybeth, for your hard work over the past couple years.

Treasurer’s Report:  The club is on budget for the year.  The dredging permit and the launch permit have both been renewed for the next year.

Yeoman’s Report:  Hot August Nights was a success again this year.  Thanks to all who attended, and thanks to 16 Penny for a great evening.

Membership Report:  There are 79 Full members, with one vacancy available.  Zak will be contacting the next on the waiting list to see if they wish to join.  Next on the waiting list are Mike Wilbur, followed by Dexter Lalack.

Technology Report:  The new gate control system is working great.  There have been no complaints from members.

Grounds:

Over the summer, the playground was strengthened with new wood where needed.  Thank you to Scott Dalke and Tom Meinzer for leading this project.  Thanks also to everyone who helped them.

The kitchen area was improved with new stainless steel tables and microwave.  The new tables should be less attractive to those pesky mice and spiders, and should be easier to keep clean!  These will be left in the kitchen area unless high water threatens them.  Thank you to Pam Halleen for leading this project, and to everyone who helped her.

It was noted that the parking stripes need to be repainted this year as many are difficult to see, and this may be why members are parking their boats in the wrong spaces.

Upcoming Events:

Sunday, October 7th, at 10:00am is the Fall Cleanup.  It’s very important we have good attendance for this!  We need to tear down the shade structures, and clean up the beach to prepare for the wet weather and high water.  After the cleanup will be a Chili Cookoff.  Bring a pot of your best chili and we’ll vote on the best.  The winner will receive a prize!

The October Board Meeting will be held at Rock’n Rogers on Monday, October 8th at 6:00pm.

The Annual Meeting will be held at Walery’s Pizza on Monday, December 10th, at 7:00pm.  Enjoy pizza and vote for the 2019 budget and slate of officers.

The Commodore’s Dinner will be at Ritter’s, in downtown Salem, on Saturday, December 15th.  Food will be catered by Wild Pear.  Invitations will be arriving soon in your mailboxes.  Please RSVP so we have an accurate count.

Old Business:

A new long-term lease should be available soon.  We have been working with Eola Investment (the owner’s of the actual property) for a mutually beneficial long-term agreement.

New Business:

It was proposed, and approved, to increase the dry moorage fees from $100/year to $200/year.  This will help offset increases in costs.  All property stored in a moorage space is required to be boating related, unless there is formal approval for an exception, and mobile.  Mobile means the item stored must be towable at will, or if it is light enough for 4 people to pick up.  Property too heavy to carry must have wheels and tires must be inflated.  There are no exceptions to the mobile requirement.  This new rule takes effect January 1, 2019.

Good of the Order:

Thank you to Tom Meinzer for your dedication to the club, and for always mowing the grass and spraying for weeds many times over the summer.

On August 26th, our Commodore met with George Thompson, an older gentleman who’s lived in Dallas since 1950.  One of the things on his “Bucket List” has been to see the confluence of the Willamette River with Rickreall Creak.  He shared some interesting history of the area with Pam, and brought members of his family down onto the beach to walk around and appreciate the beauty of the area.  Sometimes we, as members of SYBC, don’t realize how special our little place on the river is.

George shared these thoughts:

Because I’m doing this, it reminds me of something I wrote quite a long time ago.

“A thought is mine
Until in action, word, or deed
I play it out.
And it becomes a part of me
Commercialized,
Fair game for any who the knowing of
Can move it on.
Or not.”
