{"id":204,"date":"2016-01-21T17:30:08","date_gmt":"2016-01-22T01:30:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/salemyachtandboatclub.com\/?page_id=204"},"modified":"2026-04-09T09:24:23","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T16:24:23","slug":"history-of-sybc","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/salemyachtandboatclub.com\/?page_id=204","title":{"rendered":"History of SYBC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The Salem Boat Club was organized by a group of racers and skiers in 1946 and assumed its present identity as the Salem Yacht and Boating Club in 1957.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our club site was acquired in 1959.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An old hop dryer was remodeled into a clubhouse and docks were built.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1961, dolphins and pilings were driven into the slough and members began to build covered moorages.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Unfortunately, a big storm in 1962 destroyed the moorages.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The covered docks were rebuilt and wiring was put on individual meters to provide year-round power.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">On October 12, 1962, utter disaster struck our club again when the Columbus Day Storm hit the moorage with winds exceeding 100mph.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The docks were demolished.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Covers were carried over the west bank and areas of the docks were split, overturned, and squeezed together.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Boats were damaged by debris.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Consideration regarding rebuilding at another site were rejected, and under the direction of Elliot Johnson, rebuilding was started.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>By July, 1963, the stalls and docks were restored.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some time was given to fun with a Halloween Party and a Christmas Party.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Some highlights of these early years included the inception of a roving trophy in 1963 for the largest guest participation in the annual Memorial Day weekend festivities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hayden Island always won.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In December, 1964, the docks were again destroyed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A freeze followed by snow and rain brought tons of water down on the club.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A beam wind on the docks helped weaken the piling, and at 3:00am, December 23, the north dolphin broke and the docks swung held by only one cable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The wreckage threatened the bridge and a watch was set up.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The docks broke loose and were carried to total destruction in the trees a mile below.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The club bulletin became the Channel Marker in 1964.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Other high points of 1964 were predicted log races and scrambles as well as Opening Day in Portland.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Dona Battig became the first editor of the Channel Marker in 1965.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>At the 1965 Commodore\u2019s Ball, Hayden Island presented us with a declaration pledging a weekend of work from their members to help rebuild our docks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>On March 26 and 27, they kept their pledge.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The occasion was filled with laughter and good spirits along with our heart felt gratitude.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Under Commodore R.J. Van Saten, work was started in 1966 to build permanent docks that would withstand floods and wind.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Winter and spring weekend of 1966 and 1967 were devoted to the project.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Commodore Clarence Applegate carried on and by Memorial Day weekend of 1967, the covered docks were finished and secured to the bank with strong arms to allow for rise and fall of the river.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1967, log races, scrambles, and treasure hunts were continued.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our fleet was scattered between Detroit, Puget Sound, and the Columbia.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Those who stayed on the Willamette enjoyed local cruises, barbecues, and potlucks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Highlights of 1968 included a May cruise to Clarks where a roast pig was served by Dan Clark and the Riverside Yacht Club.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A champagne trip to Hayden Island\u2019s Commodore\u2019s Ball was managed by Harold Edwards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Placing first in the CRYA opening day parade was the most exciting happening of the year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fifteen of our boats negotiated the course with no mark down in score.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Fleet captain Dudley Henderson had everything organized and timed well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This event was covered in an illustrated article in the July 1968 issue of <i>Sea Magazine<\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A trip in October 1968 was also memorable.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The oyster barbeque pits were lined up along the outside edge of Dan\u2019s floating gas dock, and everyone gathered near them to be served.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The dock gradually submerged until water was ankle deep and a mad scramble for dry ground ensued.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1969, Salem placed third in the Opening Day parade.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Twenty-four slips were made available for members.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The clubhouse was renovated in 1970.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An outer deck overlooking the river was added.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The clubhouse was paneled inside and sheathed outside.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The parking lot was paved, a new bridge was built across LaCreole Creek, and several new stalls were added.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Elliot Johnson and Bill Beckett deserve a vote of thanks, along with all of the club members who helped them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The year 1971 was a productive year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The club took third place in the Opening Day competition.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Under the direction of Vem Salter, the upstairs and downstairs were carpeted and tile was laid on the dance floor and kitchen floor.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The upstairs lounge was also paneled.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Six more slips were built to bring the total to 33, with Dockmaster Elliot Johnson leading the work parties.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Over 300 people attended our Memorial Day weekend festivities with many boats cruising up from Portland.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In September, the Dale McGee\u2019s sponsored a corn bash, which has become an annual affair.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">The events of the year 1972 were many.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dockmaster Elliot Johnson and crew added another two covered stalls, bringing the total to thirty-five.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Four new and larger picnic tables were constructed.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The club kitchen and women\u2019s head gave a new coat of paint and paneling.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Memorial Day chicken barbeque was a smashing success with the Past Commodores serving 400 chicken halves to a hungry crowd.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A cruise to Independence was held on the 4<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> of July for the small hydro races.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Annual McGee Corn Bash was held with lots of corn on the cob and suds out of the keg.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The final cruise of the year was made to Portland Rowing Club for a weekend of fun.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1973 was a busy year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We had quite a few shallow water cruises with our usual good time.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Memorial Day, Riverside Yacht Club won the award for the Most Boats in attendance.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cruised to Independence for the 4<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> of July.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Some of the boats stayed for the beautiful fireworks display.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>More corn and suds on Dale McGee Day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Managed to finish the new piling before the high water.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>SYBC was the host club to CRYA for 1974.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">A busy year was ahead for us in 1974, when Harold Edwards and his new board took office.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>SYBC, for the first time, would be host for Opening Day.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In the early spring, we sponsored the Daughters of Neptune Tea at HIYC.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Sandi Well represented our club beautifully.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Opening Day was upon us and once again our members made a fine showing as lead club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Memorial Day was a weekend of fun and food.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We had a record turnout and met many old and new friends.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A new venture for many of our members was a canoe trip from Corvallis to Salem.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>As the trip came to an end, plans had started for another trip in 1975.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Cruises included Independence, Yamhill, and a closing cruise to the Albany Elks.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A lot of work was put in on the docks, clubhouse, and grounds in an effort to continue growth within our club.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It was a year of work and fun, which makes SYBC a really fun club.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1984 was the year we began our 4<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> of July fireworks celebration, which was to grow into a major annual function and the best fireworks display in Salem, thanks to our pyrotechnicians \u2013 Mick Harchenko, Del Isaac, and Jim Jones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Roger Gleason was Commodore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">1989 will always be remembered for three accomplishments:<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>1) we dredged our bank for the first time, 2) we replaced our gas and walk docks with beautiful new ones, and 3) we tore the clubhouse down.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Over time, the clubhouse had been damaged by water leaking out springs in the hillside, and it was no longer safe for use.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our Commodore was Jim Eastridge.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_407\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-407\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">June 1994<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1990, the Salem Yacht Club experienced a tremendous loss when the permanent moorage was destroyed by a heavy snowfall.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The new walk docks were salvaged and utilized for side moorage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our Commodore was Jim Jones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1991, an electric security fence and gate was installed and a long-range beautification project was initiated by our Commodore Bud Elgin.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 1992, we saw a resurgence of activity at the club.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>A covered area was built over the upper picnic area.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Our first lady Commodore was Dian Marr.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">During the winter of 1998\/1999, the walk docks were left in the water too late, and one night during high water, they disappeared downriver, never to be seen again.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In 1999, new walk docks were purchased.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Dave Hampton was Commodore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2003, the Club decided to leave the walk docks out of the water due to changing water conditions in the slough and not enough depth for boats. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_410\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption id=\"caption-attachment-410\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">July 2000<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2006, sun screens were installed over the picnic tables on the beach.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Jerry and Sharyl Combs made them, and they were put up on Memorial Day weekend.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2007, the beach was reshaped to make it nicer for families.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>However, the 2008 winter brought high waters, and by the time the river dropped to normal levels, the reshaped beach had disappeared.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">2008 brought a record turnout at the 4<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><sup>th<\/sup><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> of July Fireworks and BBQ.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>An estimated 400 people sat on the hillside, enjoying chicken, hotdogs, and music while waiting for the fireworks to begin.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Bud Elgin catered the event, and Rick Pittman provided music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>August brought our first Hot August Nights party with live music by First Sleep, a local rock band.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">John Burt was Commodore in 2009.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>This was a very nice year.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We had another very large turnout at the 4th of July Fireworks and BBQ event, and for the 2nd Annual Hot August Nights party, we enjoyed live music by The Brothers Jam.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We initiated a Member of the Year award, and the first recipient was Sharyl Combs.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_414\" style=\"width: 410px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a id=\"caption-attachment-414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">July 2010<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">2010 was a year of technology, guided by Gary Halleen as Commodore.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Security cameras were added to our facility, as well as wireless Internet access and the ability to pay for dues online, using PayPal.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>We finalized a partnership with Willamette University\u2019s Crew team for use of our facilities.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Live music for the 3rd Annual Hot August Nights party was by The Flextones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Member of the Year was Jim Eastridge.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">In 2011, we had a focus on beautification of the grounds, and built a new kitchen area in the BBQ Patio area, as well as a new changing area, next to the showers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>For the 4th Annual Hot August Nights party, we had a repeat musical performance by The Flextones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Member of the Year was Kasey Duus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Tom Meinzer was Commodore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Mike Mueller was Commodore in 2012.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The upper parking lots were cleaned up and leveled, with lines painted, allowing a large increase in available parking for boat storage.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Grounds were beautified throughout the club, and plans were drawn up for a new well.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Hot August Nights was very popular, with a large crowd.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Live music was provided by The Flextones.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Member of the Year was Gary Halleen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">A new well and pump house were added in 2013.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Commodore Sam Duus presented the Member of the Year award to Jack Stuart at the annual 3rd of July Fireworks event.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Tony Biasi was Commodore in 2014.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Member of the Year was Sam Duus.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The Flextones returned again to SYBC for an exciting annual Hot id=\"caption-attachment-416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">July 2016<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p2\">Jim Silldorff\u00a0was Commodore in 2015. \u00a0Member of the Year was John Burt. \u00a0Over the past several years, John had worked extensively with state and federal authorities, as well as a soil testing company, to ensure we are able to continue dredging the cove and maintain the beach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">Ben Taylor started the year as Commodore in 2016, but had to step down when his job relocated him to Arizona. \u00a0Vice Commodore Jerry Borsberry stood in for him the remainder of the year. \u00a0SYBC was able to finally receive proper permits to resume dredging the cove, after several years of effort. \u00a0This arduous project involved many people, including our Commodore and John Burt (a former commodore). \u00a0Member of the Year was awarded to Bill Walker for his ongoing commitment to maintaining the club.<\/p>\n<p>In 2017, Jerry Borsberry was Commodore.\u00a0 Member of the Year was Larry Dalke.\u00a0 At the annual 3rd of July event, we decided to change up the dinner, and invited several area food trucks to attend.\u00a0 This was a huge success, as we were able to reduce the admission charge and give members and guests more options for food.\u00a0 At the Hot August Nights party, entertainment was provided by 16 Penny.<\/p>\n<p>Pam Halleen was Commodore in 2018.\u00a0 We were able to accomplish some great things under her watch, including negotiation of a longer-term lease for the property, replacing our aging gate controller, replacing the old cabinets in the BBQ area, and other beautification projects.\u00a0 We continued the food trucks at the 3rd of July due to their popularity from the previous year, and had record attendance at the event.\u00a0Stew Stone was named Member of the Year.\u00a0 At Hot August Nights, 16 Penny again provided entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>For 2019, Zak Stone was Commodore.\u00a0 The club worked to make the cove deeper and wider so it was easier to launch boats from the ramp.\u00a0 Brian Forster was named Member of the Year.\u00a0 Food trucks were, again, at the 3rd of July, and we had record attendance once again.\u00a0 16 Penny performed at Hot August Nights.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1191\" style=\"width: 484px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"caption-attachment-1191\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">July 2020<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tom Meinzer served as Commodore during the difficult year of 2020. That year was marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced the shutdown of most club activities\u2014as well as restaurants, clubs, and movie theaters\u2014and significantly disrupted holiday celebrations. In addition, widespread forest fires in the Cascade and Coast mountain ranges blanketed parts of the summer in a thick reddish-yellow haze.\u00a0 Despite these challenges, there were positive moments. For the first time in memory, there was a surge of interest in joining SYBC, and by year\u2019s end, 29 applications were on the waiting list. The annual 3rd of July fireworks were canceled for the first time due to the governor\u2019s executive order limiting gathering sizes. However, the club was able to host a Hot August Nights party, featuring a great performance by the Flextones and dinner from food trucks.
